"It's gonna be good for you guys, get some publicity, get the fans involved-I think it's a great idea." Johnny Wright defended a week later-this was the meeting scheduled originally for the day of Nick's car accident. MTV were holding a competition, and the lucky winner could tour around with the Backstreet Boys on the first month of their USA leg of the tour. The winner would be staying on Nick's bus simply because he had more room than the other guys. Brian would have his family, Kevin his wife, Howie his girlfriend, and AJ said his Mom, Denise would be there from time to time, so Nick didn't have much of a choice. The competition was writing short stories and Kevin was excitedly looking through the terms of the stories detailed on the pages he held in his hands. The fans had to write a story of no more than three pages, describing what they would do with their favourite Backstreet Boy for a day, however they had to include certain elements in their stories and these elements were:
- Must include at least two Backstreet Boys as characters.
- Must include chocolate ice cream at one point.
- Must include "Sugar, we're going down" By Fall out Boy in the background to a scene.
- Must include one Backstreet Boys lyric, from a song of the fan's choice.
- Must include a real quote from the Backstreet Boy the story is about.
- Must include blue pyjamas as one point. Kevin laughed at the last one, and was imagining the type of stories they were going to receive which had to include all the elements above. "Come on, Nick…" Johnny Wright encouraged. "…It'll be fun." He reassured.
"What if it's a guy!?" Nick exclaimed playfully. He didn't want to share the private quarters of his bus with another guy-that would be weird, especially if he was a stranger. A girl-he could learn to live with and even have some fun with.
"If it's a guy…" Johnny shrugged. "Then it's a guy-but I think that's highly unlikely don't you?" He raised his eyebrows at Nick playfully. "So…" Johnny said turning to address the other four Backstreet Boys as well. "…What do you think?"
"I think it's great…" Brian began first, swiftly followed by positive opinions of the others, aside Nick, who stayed quiet. He liked the idea, but some distant fear troubled him. What if he were to have another anxiety attack while on the road? This person would find out and tell people. Even the thought of this, made Nick feel nervous. He tried to relax. He tried to tell himself that it wouldn't happen again, but his head knew better. His head couldn't predict the future anymore than his heart, but his determination wasn't going to allow it. Nick would try his best, and embrace this fan into his life for a month.
"I hope she's cute…" AJ slipped in causing giggles amongst the men. "… If she is dude-I'm soo on your bus!" He joked to Nick, punching his arm slightly. Nick laughed, as the positive possibilities of this arrangement dawned on him. He would have some new company at least.
"So it's agreed…" Johnny Wright encouraged a group consensus.
"Most definitely." Howie agreed, followed by Brian.
"Yeah I think it's a good idea." Brian cracked a cheesy grin and looked toward his cousin.
"I'm definitely in agreement." Kevin announced, after closing his little booklet of white paper, looking forward to telling his wife of the rather interesting venture.
"No complaints!" AJ proudly protested, thinking of how he could befriend this good-looking fan.
"Only if she's good looking!" Nick joked, and AJ high-fived him. "No, I mean-it's a great idea. It'll be fun." Nick confessed genuinely with a smile, hoping as he convinced the others, that he convinced himself.
