Chapter 10

“She’s kinda pretty.” Brian mentioned quietly to Nick as he ate some pasta in a restaurant they were all dining at a week later, he did not want Leighanne to hear his comment about the waitress Nick had been following with his eyes all night. Nick-s eyes wandered to her again. She had mahogany hair that was elegantly tied into a bun on the back of her head. She had an adorable little laugh and Nick watched as she giggled with some other waitresses near the entrance of the restaurant.
“Yeah she is.” Nick agreed, focusing yet again on his food. Leighanne had picked up on their conversation, and looked over.
“I-ve never seen anyone get over someone so quickly.” She teased, smiling brightly at him, which made Nick squirm in his chair, as he was reminded of his dream, when she was in his bed with him.
“I-m just special” Nick teased back. He knew he wasn-t over Paris, in fact he still had feelings of love for her, and pleasant memories would play in his mind still, on the back of his imagination like projected films, but this waitress was entrancing.
“You should go and talk to her.” AJ commented. “What’s the worst that could happen?” “Nah.” Nick said. He wasn’t quite ready to date or be rejected just yet. It had only been a couple of weeks at max- watching this waitress he could hardly remember. Nick had read on her name badge that her name was Heather- such a normal name, unlike Paris.
“Why not?” AJ persisted as teasingly as Leighanne had instigated the conversation.
“It’s not good of someone to bother her while she-s working- she must get assholes like me, bothering her all the time.¦ Nick laughed at his comment.
She must have to beat them off with a stick he thought. Nick watched discreetly as the manager broke up the three ladies and sent Heather off to serve more tables. Nick quickly looked away as she headed towards them.
“Is everything alright with your dinner?” She asked politely, with a dazzling smile. She had subtle, blue eyes that Nick looked into reminiscent of how he looked up at the stars the night he couldn-t sleep, the night of his Leighanne dream. He squirmed again thinking about it.
“Yes thank you.” Leighanne said equally polite back.
“Can I get anybody anymore to drink?” Heather enquired again, her little note pad ready to take orders.
“Can I have another orange juice please?” AJ asked her. “And, I think my man Nick here could do with another glass of wine.” AJ threw an arm around him, trying to embarrass him. Nick-s fist found his way to AJ’s privates, causing him to moan in pain quietly.
“I’m fine thank you.” Nick said, smiling at her, trying not to look like a jerk. Heather walked away confidently and Nick watched her hips move gracefully as she walked. Heather returned shortly after with AJ’s juice, and cleaned up some orange squash that Baylee had managed to spill on the table while she was gone. Baylee started sobbing. “Oh it’s alright sweetheart.” Heather comforted, and Nick-s heart melted like butter on a warm knife. “I’ll bring you another orange drink.” She reassured him. “Is he alright to have another drink?” She checked with Leighanne and Brian before ordering one.
“Oh yes please if you wouldn’t mind.” Brian said, wiping some juice from Baylee-s little pair of jeans.
“OK, the baby changing area is just right in there” Heather pointed out.
“If he needs to change out of those pants.” “Thank you.” Leighanne said registering where Heather had been pointing, and fishing around in Baylee’s little bag for some dry trousers. Nick’s eyes met Heather’s accidentally, and she smiled warmly at him. Nick blushed. He felt his cheeks grow redder as she walked away, and Kevin began laughing.
“Oh Nick” He began, Kristen at his side. “You may be all grown up now, but you’ll never escape being the youngest and the most immature.” He laughed in a friendly way, and Howie laughed also.
“You should just ask her out.” Howie said when he had finished laughing, taking a sip of water from his glass. “One date won’t kill you, it may even help” He encouraged giving Nick something to think about.
Nick however was not concentrating on what Howie was saying. His breathing was becoming irregular and his chest was hurting again- similar to dropping Paris’ stuff off, and being in the studio. He began getting more anxious thinking he may be having another panic attack. Brian noticed that he had stopped eating and was becoming pale. “You alright?” Brian asked with a look of concern on his face. “Nick?” He asked when he failed to reply, putting an arm on his shoulder, fearing he was possibly about to pass out.
“I need to go to the bathroom.” He said leaping up from the table and heading towards the bathroom. He knew he was going to be sick. He rushed towards the bathroom, seeing small blue spots as he went, until eventually his sight went white-
