| Chapter 18 |
Nick strolled into the studio two hours late, but he received no lectures or tellings off. He wondered what Dr. Belkin had disclosed to them about what had happened. Had he called and described his crying and hysteria? Nick helped himself to a Dunkin Donut- apparently Howie made a stop before arriving at the studio.
Yeah Howie saved that one for you. Kevin described rather sombrely avoiding eye contact with Nick where he could. Nick felt like he had walked into a funeral parlour; everyone looked so sad and so unenthusiastic. He picked at the donut quietly; he dared not disturb the silence. Memories flooded to him of happy times recording. He remembered recording his solo album, which the others had partially resented him for, this he knew, he wasnt stupid, but he had a good time, and expressed himself thoroughly. Dr.
Belkin had obviously told them a lot. Nick felt like an outsider in a group of happy and normal people. This saddened him deeply; he did not want to bring the others down with him- if in fact down was where he was headed. He was back in the glass jar again, looking out at everyone as if they were aliens. He was now officially the outsider. He did not want to spoil their happiness, and the thought that his emotions and actions were out of his control, made him feel useless and responsible for their morose state. His individual actions were no longer his own, they were the groups- he was reminded of this set back to being in such a tight-nit group. But he wouldnt change it. This was the only life he knew.
The session went ahead, but it was laboured and dull. Even the usual lively Brian and the presence of Baylee did not help. Nick felt worse than he ever had done. The song described about saving lives, but at this moment in time, Nick could not be saved, and sat with tears in his eyes the entire time. Baylee was soon bored enough to sleep, and slept with Nick who was laying down comfortably on his front on the sofa. Baylee was asleep on his back. Brian looked over at the two before taking a picture on his camera phone, a picture he wanted Leighanne to see. He pondered over what Nick was dreaming.
Even Brian himself noticed the awful atmosphere around them. Negativity would not affect Brian often but today the air was rank with it like maggot infested, rotten fruit. Nicks troubles brought out everyone worries and personal insecurities; everyone wants the album to be the best it can be, and be successful. The pressure to stay loyal to themselves and to their fans was tough. But the struggle was also being loyal to each other. This new experience had begun so fruitfully and passionately, and now the blossoming tree was withering. Brian wondered what on earth he could do about it- but nothing came to his numb mind.
You know what fellas? AJ began. Enough of this. He stated powerfully, taking status and position. AJ had decided to take this opportunity whilst Nick was sleeping to man his defence, and volunteer himself as Captain for Nicks fight against his problems. Yeah Nick-s going through rough times at the moment, but we gotta all pull through for him, and not be like this around him. Positive energy is contagious AJ explained trying to persuade the guys.
Im just so worried about him Howie confessed slightly reserved and distressed. Kevin nodded here and they all looked over at Nick and Baylee.
But trust me though AJ asked of his fellow-band mates. This so called bad session is not a bad session-the dramatic and the strenuous ones are the most ground-breaking Brian interrupted him.
Then why is he so depressed? He asked. Worse than before? Because Its not magic -rok, hes upset right now because hes just discovered these emotions and needs time to learn how to deal with them. Kevin sighed and leant his head against the wall. He hated seeing Nick in such a desperate state to the point where hes crying and having anxiety attacks. He couldnt bare it, he just couldnt bare it. We have to be strong for him, or else hell never get better. AJ finished and the room was silent for a moment. And well never hear the last of his moaning. AJ joked, which made the others smirk and smile the first smiles of the day.
Brian then got up and hugged AJ, until everyone aside from Nick was on their feet hugging and exchanging laughter, bringing the energy levels to a higher, more positive level. They all looked again in thought and in hope at Nick when Max Martin arrived and laughed at a sleeping Baylee passed out on a sleeping Nicks back. Little did they know that Nick wasnt even asleep.
